Join us on one of our most relaxing birding tour to date, staying 5 days and 4 nights in one of the very best birding lodges in the world – Posada Amazonas Lodge. Favoured by various travel blogs and articles, including The Telegraph, this lodge offers an extraordinary experience. Nestled in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, you’ll find yourself in a unique setting where you let the birds come to you—an unusual notion for birders. However, as the target species flock in, the sheer abundance of birdlife in this place is bound to leave you awe-struck.
Upon your arrival at Puerto Maldonado, the capital of Madre de Dios, you’ll embark on a scenic one hour bus journey with occasional stops to explore the secondary forest along the road. Keep an eye out for bird species like Purus Jacamar, White-browed Blackbird, Pearl Kite, and Scaled Pigeon.
We’ll then go on a beautiful boat ride to the lodge, taking in the lush landscapes and searching for captivating birds such as Pied Lapwing, Collared Plover, King Vulture, Bat Falcon, Olive, and Russet-backed Oropendolas, as well as the colourful Ringed Kingfisher and Amazon Kingfisher. On the boat ride, you’ll get to have your first taste of Amazonian cuisine with lunch on the river, setting the stage for the incredible jungle landscapes that await.
As we finally reach Posada Amazonas Lodge, nestled in a private concession owned by the Native Community of Infierno, you’ll be met by the staff and taken to your spacious eco-friendly room immersed in the heart of the rainforest. Your accommodation features a 45-square-meter room with an open wall facing the lush forest giving you sublime birding opportunities straight from your room!

This morning, you’ll go on a hike to the impressive 42-meter Canopy Tower, equipped with a banister staircase for your safe access to the platforms above, providing you with a unique perspective on your Amazon birding experience—the forest canopy. Here, you’ll patiently await the appearance of a canopy mixed flock, predominantly featuring tanagers like Paradise Tanager, Green-and-gold Tanager, Flame-crested Tanager, Turquoise Tanager, Opal-rumped Tanager, and others. The tower also offers excellent opportunities to spot Cream-colored Woodpecker, Gilded Barbet, Plum-throated Cotinga, and Striolated Puffbird. Keep an eye out for macaws and toucans gracefully flying on the horizon, including Chestnut-eared, Lettered, Emerald, Curl-crested, and Brown-mandible Aracaries. You might even catch sight of solitary raptors riding the thermals, providing a rare chance for hawk-eagles and possibly even harpy eagles!
A short twenty-minute walk from Posada Amazonas brings you to the parrot clay lick. From a blind positioned approximately twenty meters away, witness dozens of parrots and parakeets descending on most clear mornings to indulge in the clay on a riverbank. Species such as Mealy and Yellow-headed Amazon, Blue-headed Parrot, and Dusky-headed Parakeet frequent this clay lick, which is most active at dawn, late mornings, and mid-afternoon.
In the afternoon, we’ll continue along the Shahue Trail, known for sightings of Fiery-capped Manakin, Round-tailed Manakin, Pale Rumped Trumpeteer, and Pavonine Quetzal.

Today, you will start the day with a fifteen-minute boat ride to explore the bamboo patches around Tres Chimbadas Lake. Instead of focusing on lake birding, we will be looking for bamboo targets found here. We will be keeping an eye out for the endemic White-cheeked Tody-Tyrant, Peruvian Recurvebill, Red-billed Scythebill, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Rufous-breasted Piculet, Brown-rumped Foliage Gleaner, Large-headed Flatbill, Dusky-tailed Flatbill, Dusky-cheeked Foliage-gleaner, Flammulated Bamboo-tyrant, Dot-winged and Ornate Antwren, White-lined Antbird, Rufous-capped Nunlet, Pheasant Cuckoo, and Striped Cuckoo.
In the afternoon, we’ll do some on-foot birding on the Shije’eje Trail, where it will give us the opportunity to spot the Variegated Tinamou, Blue-crowned and Rufous Motmot, Golden-crowned Spadebill, Curl-crested Aracari, and various species within mixed flocks. A small clay lick in the area attracts Dusky-headed and Black-capped parakeets, along with Cobalt-winged Parrotlets, a highlight of the day.

This morning, we take another boat ride and a walk that will lead us to Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake, characterized by palm swamps and grassland vegetation. Our aim today is to spot a variety of target species, including Pale-vented Pigeons, Azure Gallinule, Purple Gallinule, Slender-billed and Snail Kites, Rufescent Tiger-Herons, Sungrebe, Green Ibis, Gray-breasted Crake, Rufous-sided Crake, and two iconic Amazonian species: Horned Screamers and Hoatzin.
We will also be exploring the secondary forest, shaped by various processes like selective logging recovery and slash-and-burn agriculture reclamation, allows us to focus on species adapted to this environment. Such targets include Barred Antshrike, Short-tailed Pygmy-Tyrant, Streaked Flycatcher, Boat-billed Flycatcher, Solitary Black Cacique, Gray-fronted Dove, Ruddy Ground-Dove, as well as many others.
As evening falls, we’ll take a night walk near the lodge, which will provide us with opportunities to spotlight the Pauraque, Tawny-bellied Screech-Owl, Great Potoo, Long-tailed Potoo, Ocellated Poorwill, and, with luck, a sighting of Mottled Owl or Crested Owl. Additionally, macro photography enthusiasts can capture shots of American Bullfrogs, Horned Frogs, and tree frogs, among others.
