The Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is a haven for an astonishing variety of wildlife, both big and small. It stands as one of Africa’s most breathtaking and unique wilderness areas, renowned for its diverse ecosystems and abundant wildlife. This immense oasis, fed by the Okavango River, sprawls across northern Botswana, creating a mesmerizing mosaic of floodplains, channels, lagoons, and islands. It’s also teeming in birdlife with over a staggering 500 species.

The Okavango Delta’s swamps in the northern region offer incredible year-round opportunities for birding and wildlife encounters. Exploring these swamps by boat allows for remarkable sightings. On these boat cruises, we anticipate encountering the African Pygmy Goose, White-backed Night Heron, African Skimmer, Slaty Egret, Lesser Jacana, Pel’s Fishing Owl, Coppery-tailed Coucal, and Long-toed Lapwing. Among the mammals, we hope to spot African Elephant, Red Lechwe, the elusive Sitatunga antelope that dwells in the swamps, and perhaps Spotted-necked Otters. Within the lush vegetation surrounding the swamps, expect sightings of Hartlaub’s Babbler, Swamp Boubou, Southern Carmine Bee-eater, African Barred Owlet, Holub’s Golden Weaver, and Senegal Coucal. The woodlands nearby provide a habitat for species like the African Golden Oriole (during summer), Meyer’s Parrot, Bradfield’s Hornbill, Dickinson’s Kestrel, Red-billed Spurfowl, and numerous other bird species.
