Uganda Birding Tour

Day 1 – Mabamba Swamp & Botanical Gardens

Early morning pick up and transfer to Mabamba swamp, a Ramser Site situated on the edges of Lake Victoria, hidden but with many unique and special birds on offer.

Afternoon transfer back to Entebbe for lunch and after we’ll take you birding around the botanical gardens, a diverse environment that has a lot of birds to offer. Evening Transfer to Lake Mburu National park.

Day 2 – Lake Mburo National Park

The early morning will be spent birdwatching in the park for special species such as the Wattled Starling, Northern Crombec, Lilac-breasted Roller, Red-necked Francolin, Bare-faced Go-away-bird among many more.

Day 3 – Lake Mburo National Park & Mpanga Forest

Morning spent in the park going on a boat trip looking for wetland and lake species such as Giant Kingfisher, African Fish Eagle, Shinning Blue Kingfisher among many more.

Early afternoon transfer to Mpanga Forest – a beautiful forest that holds up to 300 different bird species. Some of the highlights include the Yellow-throated Longclaw, Western Nicator, Little Greenbul, White-headed Sawwing, Winding Cisticola, Tawny-flanked Prinia, Black Cuckoo, Bronze Sunbird, Copper Sunbird, Green-headed Sunbird, Superb Sunbird, Scarlet-chested Sunbird, Variable Sunbird.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is Africa’s richest forest, with an impressive list of flora & fauna. These include 310 butterfly species, 200 tree species, several primate species including the chimpanzee and Mountain Gorilla. Oh, did I mention that is has an astonishing 350 bird species? The park is rich in Albertine endemics, where it’s unlikely you’ll see them anywhere else! If you would like to see Mountain Gorillas and some incredible birds, then this is the place.
Jinja

Jinja

Jinja, aka ‘The Source of the Nile, is where the mighty River Nile formed. It’s a wonderful place to visit on one of our Uganda birding tours. Some of the birding highlights include the Great Blue Turaco, Rock Pratencols, Giant Kingfisher, African Open-billed Stork & Green-backed Heron to name a few. We organise birding boat-trips along the River Nile, so you can get up and close to the stunning birdlife!
Kibale National Park

Kibale National Park

Called ‘The Primate Capital of the World’, Kibale National Park, is one of the world’s best primate parks. The park holds a population of 1450 chimpanzees and 13 species of primates overall. The birdlife is great as well, with a bird list of 335 species, thanks to the nearby Bogodi Wetland Sanctuary! A trip to Kibale is a must for any birder visiting Uganda.
Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Valley National Park

Renowned as ‘The True African Wilderness’, Kidepo Valley does live up to it’s name. Due to the park being less accessible, it is one of Uganda’s least visited parks. However, don’t let that put you off, as this means is you get to reap in all the benefits due it’s isolation! It has the largest herds of Cape Buffalo in Africa, whilst boasting Lion, Leopard & Elephant. The best part though, for us birders, is of course, the birdlife. It holds a handful of Uganda’s rarest species such as the Black-breasted Barbet & Karamoja Apalis!
Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo offers not only great game viewing but fantastic birding opportunities. It has diverse savanna species that overlap from Tanzanian border, as well as many wetland species. Highlights include African Finfoot, White-backed Night Heron, Giant Kingfisher, Striated Heron, Rufous-bellied Heron & Pel’s Fishing Owl to name a few. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

This small but beautiful park enjoys a magnificent setting on the northern slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes. Two rare primates are found here – the Mountain Gorilla and Golden Monkey. This park offers a unique Batwa Forest birding experience with highlights including Rwenzori Turaco, African Hill Babbler, Kivu Thrush, Shelley’s Crimsonwing, Dusky’s Crimsonwing, Red-faced Woodland Warbler, Chubs Cisticola, Mountain Buzzard, Regal Sunbird and the Blue-headed Sunbird.
Mount Elgon National Park

Mount Elgon National Park

Mount Elgon is one of Africa’s oldest volcanic mountains and has fantastic birdlife. If offers beautiful vistas, numerous caves and cascading waterfalls. The park contains a staggering 240 plus bird species, with highlights including the Purple Grenadier, Jameson’s Firefinch, Red-fronted parrot, Egyptian Vulture, Ayere’s Hawk-eagle, Yellow-spotted Petronia, White-breasted Cuckoshrike and Red-fronted Barbet.
Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls is the largest National Park in Uganda, made famous by the mighty Murchison Waterfalls. The rushing water of the Nile is forced through a narrow gorge and is a spectacle to behold. The park holds 4 of Africa’s Big Five and holds a whopping 460 bird species! Some highlights include the Red-throated Bee-eater, Black-billed Barbet, White-headed Barbet, Denham’s Bustard, Black-billed Barbet, Northern Carmine Bee-Eater, Lappet-faced Vulture & Silverbird.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda’s most popular park! It is famous for its tree-climbing lions and its large Chimpanzee population. It also holds the record for the highest number of bird species within Uganda! Blessed with lakes, forest gorges, savanna, swamp and rivers, it’s no wonder people are flocking here every year.
Rwenzori National Park

Rwenzori National Park

One of Africa’s highest mountain range, the ‘Mountains of the Moon’ is a birding paradise. This unique and dramatic habitat is home to a bountiful amount of birdlife (217 species recorded). Some of these include Uganda’s most beautiful and unique species such as the Lammergeyer, Golden-winged Sunbird, Bamboo Warbler, Rwenzori Turaco, Scarlet-tufted Malachite Sunbird and Mountain Yellow Flycatcher among many more.
Semuliki National Park

Semuliki National Park

Proclaimed as ‘The True Birders’ Haven’, Semuliki National Park is a must for any birder. It represents the easternmost tract of the Congo’s Great Ituri Forest and has a staggering 441 bird species. Black Dwarf Hornbill, Shining Blue Kingfisher and Yellow-throated Nicator are a few of the highlights you can expect when visiting!
